We visualized how local governments regulate land use to provide the actionable insights leaders need to achieve their climate, equity, affordability goals

More about this project

Partnership for Land Use Insights compiles and analyzes data on how local governments regulate land use to provide the actionable insights leaders need to achieve their goals—climate, equity, affordability, and more—for the land on which we live. Their dataset is an unparalleled resource for evidence-based evaluation of local housing policy, making it an important tool for policy analysis as well as transparency and accountability.

DataMade built an interactive visualization of Partnership for Land Use Insight’s data to make these insights publicly accessible. Users can view housing development in more than a dozen California cities and drill down into the data to answer questions like:

  • Where does development take longest?
  • How many projects include affordable housing?
  • Which projects have faced community opposition?

In addition to the visualization, DataMade included a content management system (CMS), enabling Partnership for Land Use Insights to publish their own expert evaluation of development trends and their consequences on a continuous basis.
